When it comes to Frankenstein-like junk food, only one fast food chain reigns supreme. In the past few years alone, Taco Bell has given us Doritos cheesy gorditas, Captain Crunch donut holes, and Mountain Dew slushies. Just when you thought they couldn’t possibly get more over-the-top, they have announced the testing of another indulgent menu item.
Starting in mid-August, Taco Bell will be testing a Cheetos Burrito in select cities. No doubt piggybacking off the success of Burger King’s Mac N’ Cheetos snack, Taco Bell has created their own cheesy mashup. The burrito will contain flavorful ground beef, nacho cheese, rice, and of course, the crisp and crunchy morsels we’ve all grown to know and love.
Earlier this year, Taco Bell released two varieties of a Cheetos Crunchwrap sliders across their Canadian locations. However, for us Americans, this burrito will be the first of its kind. If tested positively, the burrito will hit main menus and will reportedly cost $1. Delicious and affordable. Can you think of a greater combination?
On a good day, I like to think that I have refined palate. I love dry and full-bodied red wines and the squishy mouth-feel of fresh lychee fruit. I drink cups of green tea sans sugar and I genuinely enjoy the taste of home-brewed kombucha. That part of me has turned her nose up at the mere thought of junk food stuffed and surrounded by more junk food.
But…a larger part of me, the college girl who loved a greasy hero piled high with toppings after a night of drinking, can see the true potential in this culinary combination. Nothing soaks up a night out quite like a winning mix of cheese, carbs, and salt. And in true-Taco Bell fashion, this burrito will graciously provide me with all three. So, that girl? Well, she’s counting down the days and anxiously awaiting its arrival.
