There’s a new food cooking up a storm in Brooklyn and yes, it is as crazy and over the top as it sounds. The mufgel is a cross between a muffin and a bagel and it’s next in line for hybrid food royalty. Soon, it will join the ranks of its esteemed predecessors (i.e. the cronuts, the ramen burgers, the bread-stick sandwiches and the cereal coated donut holes).
The snack was created by Scot Rossillo of The Bagel Store in Brooklyn. His other huge claim to fame includes the delicious and totally Instagrammable rainbow bagels. Rossilo says that the idea for this kooky treat started out as a joke when he heard an advertisement on for the lottery that was satirizing the culinary world obsession with food mashups. The mugfel became his tongue-in-cheek answer to the commercial and bagel-loving Brooklynites have been eating it up ever since.
The mufgel has been available since the end of July and since then, folks have been eagerly heading over to Williamsburg to get a bite. They’re still listed as a limited edition item and it seems that people are attempting to get their fix of this unique treat before it’s gone forever.
While there are no official mufgel flavors listed on the menu, The Bagel Store has showcased pictures of fruity pebbles, carrot cake and chocolate chip varieties. And, in true NYC bagel store fashion, they boost numerous schmear flavors ranging from funfetti to cannoli cream. With such wildly decadent combinations available, it’s easy to understand why the mufgel’s popularity keeps growing and growing.
Rossilo has been quoted as saying that so far, he and his team have only been baking 42 of these hybrid treats a day. But, here’s to hoping that number increases exponentially.
Fruity pebbles mufgel with funfetti cream cheese? Yum. Don’t mind if I do.
