Ever heard of Loacker? If not, you’re missing out. Founded in 1926, this Italian company based in South Tyrol has been known for making sweets that involve crisp wafers and various kinds of chocolate and other flavors such as hazelnut coffee and more.

We could tell you more about the company, but they we’ll let them do the talking for themselves:

Combining a love of nature with a passion for the art of baking results in a delicious creation. We apply craftsmanship to the best untreated and unmodified raw ingredients to make wafer and chocolate specialties that are sought after for their fresh, crisp taste, delicate creams and fine chocolate. It was over 90 years ago that the Loacker brand started in the little confectionery shop of Alfons Loacker in Bolzano, Italy. To this day we have been true to our original ideal. In manufacturing our products in the heart of the Italian Alps, 1000 meters above sea level, we focus precisely on the most important element for us: the pure quality of our products.

Recently, we got a chance to try two flavors from their Gran Pasticceria line, which is essentially their Classic Wafers line wrapped in a layer of chocolate and topped with various other goodies like coconut shavings, crispy rice or chocolate drizzle. Did they taste as good as they sound? You bet they did!

Noir Orange – Fine dark chocolate biscuits with chocolate-orange cream

These crisp, delicious treats are quite the flavorful explosion. There’s something about dark chocolate and orange that work extremely well together. The orange isn’t overpowering at all but it adds a nice depth of flavor, while the texture of these wafers are spectacular as well. The smooth chocolate set against the crispiness of the classic Loacker wafers and puffed rice on top is very unique on the palate and makes for a delicious treat.

Coconut – Fine milk chocolate biscuits with coconut cream

Another strong offering from Loacker, these sweet and nutty treats come off like a more refined Almond Joy (minus the almonds), providing a delicious crunch to go along with the smooth milk chocolate. Their milk chocolate isn’t a particularly unique or outstanding in and of itself, but no chocolate is bad chocolate if you ask us.

Their coconut cream, on the other hand, is quite tasty. It has just the right balance of sweetness and adding the coconut shavings on the outside tops off this scrumptious snack spectacularly. They aren’t as good as the Noir Orange, but still very enjoy.

If you’re looking for a unique sweet treat to snack on this holiday season, check out Loacker and their tasty Gran Pasticceria line of chocolate covered, cream filled wafers. Unfortunately, you can’t get them online from the Loacker website, but you can pick them up at a number of popular retailers such as Giant Eagle, Target, Publix, Whole Foods, and more for about $3.49 per 12-piece box. Believe us when we say they’re well worth the price.
